Some people spend their entire life searching for their true calling.  And sometimes the true calling finds them.  Perhaps it’s a career that is rich in personal rewards knowing you’ve helped someone at the end of the day.  Or maybe it’s a career driven by a passionate interest or that challenges you daily.  Or maybe it’s a career that you were simply born to do.  For Dr. Phil Greenwood, his career as a marriage and family therapist is all of these things and more. It just comes naturally to him.

A Calling

Like so many Americans, Phil first answered the call to support and defend his country.  “Joining the Navy was one of the best decisions I ever made,” Phil says today.  “I grew up quickly, became disciplined and developed a work ethic that’s helped me succeed in life.”  But it wasn’t just the desire to serve his country that inspired Phil.  It was the drive to make a difference in some way, to really have an impact on the lives of others.  In a sense, that has always been his true calling.  He found that opportunity serving as a hospital corpsman and a neuro-psychiatric technician in the US Navy Hospital Corps.  Serving the needs of others by being of help to them—especially in times of need—is extremely important to Phil.  In many ways, it is the foundation of his life.

A Genuine Passion

“I just love what I do.” Phil says. “In the time since I entered this business, so much has changed about how therapy is conducted.  I’ve been diligent on staying on top of all the changes, but I’m still as passionate as ever for meeting new people and helping them make the most of their lives and their relationships with others.”  Phil’s passionate approach also extends outside his work.  He’s a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.  Phil is actively involved in community causes, especially those that support the arts and creative expression.  On the weekends, you might catch him spending quality time with his family, strumming his guitar or 5-string banjo, or volunteering his time at Second Stage Amherst.

A Premier Professional

Clearly, Phil has never been the type of person to settle for second best.  In both his personal and professional life, he works hard to make things happen.  It’s an approach that’s at the core of his success in his career as a premier marriage and family therapy professional. “I’ve never been someone who is content with the status quo,” Phil says. “No matter what I’m doing, I see ways to make things just a little bit better.  I find great satisfaction pushing boundaries and exceeding expectations.”  You can hear it in praises of his clients, Phil is known for providing counseling and support that’s simply of a higher standard.

Words of Praise for Dr. Phil Greenwood:

“Dr. Greenwood has been treating me for Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder for almost a year now.  I trust him & know that what I tell him is confidential.  He is empathetic & compassionate, but challenges me as necessary & helps provide me with the tools & skills I need to manage my disorders.  I’ve had issues with depression for most of my life & had other therapists, but Dr. Greenwood is the first I’ve worked with who I felt is actually helping me get to my core issues.  I cannot recommend him highly enough.”

- C. H., Bedford County, VA

"As I navigate a difficult time, I am grateful for Phil Greenwood’s kind, intelligent, nurturing presence.  I look forward to my talks with him;  they are tremendously helpful.  Meeting with him revives and steadies me.  He is scrupulously conscientious about his profession's ethics and confidentiality.  I feel heard, understood and respected.  Listening with a calm steady gaze, he seems to fit the kinds of response to my needs, and he treats all of my feelings and ideas with attention and dignity.  His feedback is subtle, in the form of gentle observations or suggestions and comments that upon reflection I might decide to treat as suggestions."

- L.P., Lynchburg, VA

“Dr. Greenwood listens closely but gives people space to come to their own conclusions.  He has patience, objectivity, and most important, common sense.”

- M.W., Lynchburg, VA
